I've just sent the proof of the short version off to press! I should have it back in a week or so.

The interior design and selection of the short version is just about done. Everything should be ready to send off in a day or so.

it's been a while since i've posted, mostly because i've been so busy. the support for my amen project has been tremendous. i even have some celebrities wearing the line, including sean paul and mario lopez. the shirts are almost all sold out at this point and the prints are moving. if you have been waiting to buy a shirt and see the size available, get it now. it might not be around tomorrow.

i also have a few extremely limited one-off amen shirts made. these are interesting interpretations on the originals done on unique pieces of apparel with different printing techniques. none of these are being sold, all are given away to good friends and the cats that have been showing love for a long time.

About Amen

Amen is the last book in a series of six books that cover about 1000 pages and span the last five years of my life. You can see most of these books in the projects section. Check out the FAQ below if you have any questions or contact: chris@chriskoehler.com.

What Is Support Amen?

This site is dedicated to spreading the word about Amen. While the short version is being sold exclusively through this site, the final goal is for Amen to be published. If you can help in any way or are interested in publishing Amen, please contact: chris@chriskoehler.com.

faq
why is it all black and red?

this is probably the first thing most people ask me when they see the book. the short answer (and most honest) is that i really like black and red. i like the way they work together and it's more interesting than black and some other color. this is the first book i've done with a third color, so i just chose one and stuck with it. the long answer has to do with the connotations of red and black and and how in a post-modern world the discourse tends to... uh.. i don't know. in a very pragmatic sense, if i am only working with red and black, then i won't accidentally confuse one of them for green, which is a plus.

what do you use to draw the images?

the entire book is done with a red pentel color brush, a black pentel color brush, a white out pen, a .5 mechanical pencil, and an eraser. the brush pens are really versatile and have replacable cartridges. you can pick them up at kinokuniya stationary in japan town. they aren't cheap though (i've spent over $150 on ink catridges for this book alone).

how long have you been working on this?

this book was started february, 2005 and finished december 6, 2006.

how long is the book?

all together the book as i have it will be 220 pages with 207 of those being drawings. the published version will probably be cut down to about 80 pages due to quality control. The self published short version is 52 pages.

did you draw that out of your head?

pretty much every picture is a clever combination of on location (on the bus or in the bar) drawing, imagination, and a touch of reference here and there.

is there a story?

this is an interesting question. this book is like a choose-your-own-adventure book with no choices or clear cut endings. it is completely interpretive and i'd prefer that people find their own meanings in the pictures. because these books reflect my life through what i see and imagine, they are also autobiographical, but that isn't very interesting.

are you going to publish it?

indeed. that's what this whole site is for- to raise money and awareness so i can eventually publish this bad boy.

whats with all the waves/trees/hair/hearts?

i really like waves/trees/hair/hearts.

why is the book called amen?

it is the end to a long long project that was in many ways a spiritual journey, so it's fitting.
